Our Story

Growing What Matters

“I started Plants by J because I couldn't find the quality of plant starts I wanted to grow myself.”

Most berry plants sold commercially are field-divided — meaning they're cut from existing stock that may carry viruses, crown gall, or other diseases invisible to the eye. Tissue-culture propagation solves this. Each plant is grown from a tiny piece of meristematic tissue in sterile lab conditions, producing starts that are genetically identical to the mother plant and certified disease-free.

That's how Plants by J started — with the conviction that berry growers deserve clean, vigorous stock. From there, the collection grew to include tropicals that excite me as a grower, heirloom seedlings I believe in, and heritage fruit varieties that deserve more attention.

Everything here is something I would plant in my own garden. If it doesn't meet that standard, it doesn't ship.

Why Tissue Culture?

Tissue-culture propagation is the gold standard for producing disease-free berry plants. Here's why it matters for your garden.

Lab-Propagated

Lab-Propagated

Plants are grown from meristematic tissue in a sterile laboratory — not divided from field stock that may harbor invisible pathogens.

Virus-Free Guarantee

Virus-Free Guarantee

The tissue-culture process eliminates viruses, crown gall, and systemic diseases that can reduce yields for years before symptoms appear.

Stronger Starts

Stronger Starts

TC plants develop robust, fibrous root systems from day one. They establish faster, produce sooner, and live longer than conventionally propagated stock.
