Granadilla (Passiflora alata) is the sweet passionfruit — milder, less acidic, and more aromatic than P. edulis, with a distinct fragrance profile. Native from Ecuador through Brazil and northeastern Argentina, the hard orange shell cracks open to reveal translucent pulp with edible seeds, prized in South American cuisine. Important for growers: P. alata is self-incompatible. Fruit production requires a second compatible plant and active pollination — either from large native bees or by hand. Plan for at least two vines.
