The pomegranate is one of the oldest cultivated fruits in human history, prized for thousands of years across the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Asia. Each fruit is filled with hundreds of jewel-like arils bursting with sweet-tart juice rich in antioxidants. Beyond the fruit, pomegranate trees are strikingly ornamental — in late spring and summer, the branches light up with crinkled, scarlet-orange tubular flowers that attract hummingbirds and pollinators. Fall brings golden-yellow foliage that rivals any ornamental for seasonal color. Pomegranates are self-fertile, so a single tree will produce fruit, though planting two can increase yields. Exceptionally heat-tolerant and drought-resistant once established, they thrive in the hot summers of the Southeast and perform beautifully in dry, alkaline soils where many fruit trees struggle. Their manageable size and dense branching make them excellent candidates for large containers, edible hedges, or specimen plantings. Few fruit trees combine this level of beauty, productivity, and low maintenance.
